Choosing the classroom that is right for you
How do we meet the needs of our university's instructors, presenters, and guest lecturers? How can we provide spaces that suit the needs of all of these people without breaking the bank?

While all universities have classroom standards in place, we here at WCU have begun to break out our standards into a new more versatile tier based system. Our tiered approach is designed to take hardware "packages" made up of equipment modules to meet the client's classroom needs. The diverse needs and budgets of the individual colleges and departments at our university have lead us to creating a "stackable" set of classroom technology that is designed with low cost and high capability in mind.

Each of our tiers is designed to be as cost effective, functional, and future-proof as is possible. Each equipment module can also be extracted and paired with another to maximize efficiency of a specific space.

IT Means Technology Access for All
ECU is committed to providing accessible technology and educational resources. Computer labs, learning platforms, web pages, multimedia content and applications should be accessible to everyone including individuals with disabilities. By establishing an accessibility and compliance program and keeping up to date with current trends in educational technology, learning platforms and web development, East Carolina University is addressing the needs of all students and ensuring access.

In this session we will share our experience of developing and implementing an IT Accessibility Plan. We will discuss how to build a solid plan including evaluation of the learning technology environment, adoption of assessment tools and strategies, importance of Universal Design for Learning, and creation of a campus-wide IT accessibility committee. We will highlight the processes and practices we are implementing to ensure our learning tools and environment are accessible, and we will discuss the significance of campus collaboration and training.

Learn To Become Media-Tastic!
Video is everywhere and is quickly becoming the norm for engagement and delivery. From pumping gas, to picking up a happy meal at McDonalds, digital media is influencing our lives everyday. As an IT professional, many of us find it difficult to produce high quality media without breaking the bank. This often leads to creating stagnant videos no one really wants to watch. In this session, you'll learn how to create visually stunning media using tools you may already own and do it with in a reasonable budget.

Preparing Teachers for the Online Classroom (i3@UNC)
Today, nearly half of the UNC system’s students — 46 percent — take an online course at least once during their college career, and 11 percent take courses fully online. The University of North Carolina Instructional Innovation Incubator (i3 @UNC) is a hands-on, residential program for faculty developing new online, blended, hybrid, or otherwise technologically-enhanced courses. The week long intensive program combines guest speakers discussing a range of topics including course design, assessment, and integrating active tools into online courses. The organizers also arranged for structured time with UNC System instructional technologists, so faculty could work on their courses. In this session, hear from the IT Consultants who participated in i3@UNC by supporting faculty. What are some of the challenges facing a support team when faculty are developing new, more technically-enhanced courses? Come participate in the discussion.

Better than it sounds: animated videos with PowerPoint
When NC State's Office of Information Technology needed to make animated videos for new employee orientation, we went hunting for a product. When we couldn't find one that did everything we needed it to, we got creative. Our solution? Easy-to-update, highly-customized, low-learning-curve animated videos created in PowerPoint and recorded using simple screen capture with voiceover. In this presentation, you'll see a demo of one of the videos and get a behind-the-scenes look at how it was made.

Designing VR Experiences for Higher Ed
Over the last couple of years, the world of virtual reality has quickly immersed itself into education. What was once considered science fiction is now becoming mainstream for major production companies, independent producers and educators. Classroom teachers and students now have easier access to tools that allow them to produce their own virtual reality experiences. Participants in this presentation will walk away with a basic understanding of the design and production process for creating virtual reality experiences for education.

Learning Objectives

  1. A basic understanding of the rapid evolution of virtual reality in education.

  2. Discuss and solve for a scenario-based instructional problem with a VR experience.

The chicken or the egg? Which comes first: online teaching or online course development?
In order to enhance and increase its online course offerings, NCA&T State University has begun an aggressive program to train faculty how to teach online, and how to develop online courses. When faculty are asked to teach or develop an online course, some enter the arena with little or no online experience. This presentation describes how learning to teach online and how to develop an online course mutually complement each other, no matter the order in which they occur. A hybrid online teaching course and a course development template will be featured and discussed.
