Firewall Evolution: Selecting and Migrating to the Next Generation of UNC's Managed Service

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Six years ago, UNC Chapel Hill created its first administratively funded, enterprise-wide firewall service offer. Over the course of Q3 & Q4 of 2015, and Q1 of 2016, UNC Chapel Hill's Information Security Office purchased the next generation of firewalls, migrated over 400 firewall zones (comprising over 150 client departments, schools, administrative units, and groups with thousands of servers and tens of thousands of end users), enabled advanced firewall features, and retired the original firewalls - all without major failures or crises.

This talk will outline the goals, processes, and next steps of this project as we continue expanding and evolving the firewall service offered on campus. The risks we seek to address are universal, and the approach we took - and the lessons we learned - can be of use to any school of any size.

Topics covered include:

  • The Risks: What Dangers We Want to Address & Why

  • Blessings from Above: Getting Backing (and by “Backing” I Mean Money)

  • The Great Firewall Bakeoff: A Few Words on Selecting a Vendor

  • Collaboration, Not Just Delivery: Building a Reseller Relationship for the Life of the Product

  • Mise-en-Place: Getting the Right Resources Together to Start

  • Making Waves: Creating & Communicating Crests & Lulls in the Project

  • The Washing Up: Cleaning Up Rules, Disposing of Hardware

  • The Future: Where We Are & Where We're Going

For each topic we will highlight the distinction between what we did that worked well and what we wish we had done in hindsight, so that the presentation overall is focused on helping others plan their own projects.
